Pleasure:
The Ultimate Healing tonic
Pamela
L. Chubbuck Ph.D.
Do
you want to know the number one curative
agent without which you cannot heal? Of
course you do! You may find this hard to
believe because it seems too easy - and
we all really want it. The best immune-boosting,
stress-busting, intimacy building and ultimate
spiritually-connecting strategy all rolled
into one - is pleasure. Yep, pleasure. There
are many studies that tell us that being
able to experience pleasure keeps us younger,
healthier, and happier. It even adds years
to our lives.
The ability to give and receive love
is what gives us the greatest pleasure.
Love and pleasure are the same life current.
A pleasurable state is what we long for
and is a healthy spiritual and practical
goal. To love intimately, and completely
with your body, soul, and spirit advances
you on your road to health and healing.
However, many of us have difficulty experiencing
true pleasure.
True
pleasure is not the stuff advertised on
TV or in newspapers. Buy- one- get -one-
free type materialistic stuff. It's
not the addictions we indulge in that temporarily
give us the illusion of pleasure - smoking,
working too hard - too long, watching too
much TV, drugs, alcohol, or computer addiction
for example. True pleasure is not about
pastimes of the mind. Nor hedonistic pleasure
and definitely not sex disconnected from
our hearts - from love.
Real connected pleasure fills our bodies, minds, and souls with the vibrations of life. Real pleasure flows through us like a clear bubbling brook and is a state of physical and spiritual bliss that is experienced in every particle of our bodymind. It is the Life Force moving through us and moving us along our own creative paths toward enlightenment. We long for this, but many of us have a hard time feeling the depth of pleasure that creates bliss, peace, and pulsates in all our cells. Why can't we feel as much and as deeply as we want to? And how can we bring the pleasure of spontaneous life enhancing energy to us? How can something pleasurable do so much good? Didn't our parents, teachers, etc. tell us that the important things in life were about doing well in school, looking good, and keeping our room and ourselves clean? They taught us to act like they wanted us to. Mostly they did not encourage us to be ourselves in our own Core Essence - the truth of our own being. Then, the church iced the cake, teaching that doing and thinking good, not feeling good was godly. (As opposed to the God who encourages loving pleasure.) And we all have been hurt in love. It is no wonder we tense up, contract, and resist letting go to the pleasure of life. I
knew James Prescott, Ph.D., psychologist,
formerly with NIMH, in the early 70's,
when he researched forty different cultures
around the world. He discovered that to
the degree cultures touched, held and breastfed
their children, they not only had more pleasure,
which is no surprise to us, more surprising
perhaps is they had less violence.
