Reconsecration:
Tibetan Monks Lead World Peace Ritual
by
Osha Ana Curran
In
this time of uncertainty, peace loving
people are searching for ways to contribute
towards peace and happiness. In December,
Sensua Gallery will present a wonderful
opportunity for people of all beliefs
to join their prayers of peace.
The
Tibetan Buddhist monks of Drepung Loseling
Monastery will be performing the ancient
ritual of sand mandala creation. Sand
mandalas are an ancient Buddhist spiritual
art, which dates back some 15,000 years,
and each mandala serves a specific purpose.
Sensua's mandala is called the Buddha
Achala, or the Buddha of Protection,
and is designed for protection, compassion,
and the resolution of conflict. The Buddha
Achala mandala is only created in times
of war, and has never been made in America
before.
Now
is a fitting time for the first ever creation
of the Buddha of Protection here in America.
Afterwards, the Drepung Loseling monks
will visit the sites of the September
11th attacks to offer their blessings
and healing energies through the creation
of sand mandalas on those consecrated
grounds.
The
Drepung Loseling Monastery was originally
established in 1416 near Lhasa, Tibet.
It became the home of over 15,000 monks;
the Second Dalai Lama made his residence
here in 1494.
The
monastery thrived for centuries until
the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959,
when the Drepung Loseling Monastery, among
thousands of others, was destroyed. A
number of monks were able to escape these
terrors and reestablish Drepung Loseling
Monastery in Karnataka State, South India,
where they were able to carry on their
teachings in a free society. Since then
many young Tibetans have escaped their
Chinese occupied homeland to study at
the monastery, preserving their ancient
traditions and culture.
Drepung
Loseling's populatin has increased to
more than 2,500. Monks have chosen to
bring their beautiful culture to the United
States with The Mystical Arts of Tibet
tours, featuring the famed multiphonic
singers of Drepung Loseling monastery
and Sand Mandala Painting. These tours
have been endorsed by His Holiness the
Dalai Lama as a means of promoting world
peace and healing through sacred performing
arts.
Drepung
Loseling Monks will be performing the
Sand Mandala ritual at Sensua Gallery,
a fitting venue for this spiritual event.
Sensua Gallery is a mystical space filled
with spiritually inspired carvings from
Hindu and Buddhist cultures, and an amazing
collection of crystals, fossils, and rare
mineral specimens from Brazil, Morocco,
Siberia and Madagascar.
