New Age and World Music

Get closer to nature this month while you explore the newest music releases. You can start with BEARS, a soundtrack for the IMAX movie of the same name. It features songs by Lyle Lovett, Mary Youngblood, Claude Carmichael and Pete Wasner, Paul Reisner, Lawrence Laughing, and Alice Gomez with an original score by Violaine Corradi, musical director of Cirque du Soleil. The overall tone is Native American, with drums, rattles, flutes, but it's a big sound that's fit for a movie of IMAX scale. A National Wildlife Federation and Science North Presentation, the film and the music “reveals the mystery of bears, from their mythical past to their fragile future, in a unique and entertaining listening experience.” (Silverwave Records)

If your spirit animal is more of the canine type, you'll like Wolves in the Wind. This one starts out in eerie stillness, with the sound of cold winds blowing snow, and then you hear them in the distance... the wolves howling. This beautiful symphonic music conveys with total realism the awesome grandeur and loneliness of the frozen north. At first, it seems so lonely, but by the final track, you are at home with the wolves. It's divided into four tracks: “Journey to Now,” “World of White,” “Intimacy of the Heart,” and “In the Presence.” The final track, “In the Presence,” puts you up close to the pack, and you can hear them in all the complexity of their language. Wolves in the Wind will bring out the wild nature in you. (Oreade Music)

On a more warm and gentle note, Kevin Kendle's Flowers blooms into eight delightful instrumental pieces as fresh as a spring morning in the garden. Part of a series of over two dozen garden music and nature sound environmental recordings, Flowers evokes the sunny, cheerful energy of a butterfly visiting a daffodil's petals. Kendle has had personal experience with the healing arts, and uses music to create peaceful environments and uplift emotions. A multi-talented musician, Kendle plays all the instruments on the recording, except for the guitar tracks by Ian Cameron Smith. This music is an innocent delight. (New World Music)
