Healing
Drummer

Sarhan,
Sufi
master,
founder
of
the
Sufi
Foundation,
will
be
conducting
traditional
Sufi
techniques
including
whirling,
drumming,
breathing,
meditation,
chanting
and
dancing,
January
24th
-
27th
in
Atlanta.
For
over
thirty
years
he
has
introduced
people
and
organizations
such
as
the
Earth
Summit
and
the
United
Nations
to
the
magic
and
majesty
of
his
“rapid
method”.
The
following
is
an
excerpt
of
my
interview
with
him.
Gabrielle:
Tell
me
how
all
of
this
began
for
you,
Adnan.
Adnan:
I
grew
up
seeing
Dervishes
whirling,
people
drumming
and
dancing
as
part
of
daily
life.
So
as
a
child,
I,
too,
started
drumming
and
I
also
was
trained
in
all
the
traditional
Sufi
techniques.
We
would
describe
Sufi
technique
as
the
“way
of
the
heart”
-
those
practices
which
bring
you
to
the
intelligence
of
the
heart.
I
came
to
America
to
attend
college
for
my
agricultural
degree.
One
year,
I
was
in
a
college
talent
show:
I
drummed
for
the
audience
and
everyone
wanted
me
to
teach
them
to
dance
and
drum.
It
just
grew
spontaneously
from
there.
I
was
planning
on
an
agricultural
career,
but
I
ended
up
drumming
and
teaching
to
bigger
and
bigger
audiences
and
then
began
to
travel
all
over
the
world.
Gabrielle:
How
does
your
drumming
and
meditation
work
facilitate
healing
for
people?
Adnan:
My
drumming
is
based
on
the
rhythms
of
the
entire
universe.
Drumming
is
a
bridge
from
the
rhythm
of
the
body
to
the
rhythm
of
the
universe.
Everything
in
life
is
a
rhythm.
I
direct
the
rhythm
of
the
drum
to
the
centers
of
the
body.
I
have
created
a
special
rhythm
of
drumming
that
breaks
the
old
rhythms
of
the
brain
and
heart.
Then
a
new
rhythm
is
born
inside
the
body.
This
new
rhythm
goes
to
the
deepest
part
of
the
body
and
the
brain.
A
new
consciousness
is
born.
You
see,
the
mind
is
like
a
computer
with
millions
of
messages
and
patterns
-
my
method
of
drumming
and
meditation
stops
the
old
messages,
goes
directly
into
the
brain
and
births
a
new
rhythm
in
the
brain.
The
brain
is
then
completely
clear.
A
new
intelligence
of
the
heart
and
the
mind
is
now
possible.
Joy
and
happiness
and
immense
creativity
are
now
possible.
