New Thought Arrives in DeKalb County

By Deborah L. Shelton-Ogiste

January 20, 2002 was the inauguration ceremony of Christ Unity Temple of Stone Mountain located at 5513 Mountain East, Stone Mountain, GA. During his inaugural sermon Rev. James Fife, founding minister, remarked on the historical implications of having the first meeting of an African American New Thought Church at the base of Stone Mountain. [Editor's note: For those unfamiliar with the area's history, Stone Mountain has been the site of Ku Klux Klan meetings in the past.]

Christ Unity Temple of Stone Mountain follows the teachings of Rev. Johnnie Coleman, founding minister of Christ Universal Temple of Chicago, Ill., and Dr. Barbara King, founding minister of Hillside Chapel and Truth Center and the Barbara King School of Ministerial Studies in Atlanta, GA.

Rev. Fife began his studies at Christ Universal Temple in 1966 as a member of the congregation. He worked with Rev. Coleman as they set the stage to revive the Christ consciousness to the I AM. Christ Universal Temple is currently the largest African American New Thought Church in the nation.

Rev. Fife moved to Atlanta in 1987 and became a member of Hillside Chapel and Truth Center and continued his studies at Barbara King School of Ministerial Studies. Dr. King, founding pastor of Hillside Chapel and Truth Center, built her ministry with the understanding that people are searching for inner peace, and through teaching the truth as taught by Jesus the Christ they would find that inner peace by finding the God within them. Rev. Fife remained at BKSM as an instructor for many years teaching many students who went on to become ministers and teachers all over the world.

Rev. Fife was inspired by Spirit on December 17, 2001 to start a church on the East Side of Atlanta. “When I finished with my meditation it was clear that I was to start a church,” Rev. Fife recalls, “Once I spoke the words the church came fully clothed. Within days of speaking the words all necessary arrangements started falling into place.” Listening to Spirit, Rev. Fife was led to surround himself with a Board that assisted in getting the church up and going by January 20, 2002. His dream came to actualization in the matter of one month. The congregation has been growing steadily since its inauguration. Each board member brings to the table unique gifts and backgrounds.
