The
powerful
magic
of
Tulku
returns
this
month
with
their
new
release,
A
Universe
to
Come
(New
Earth
Records).
The
cover
painting,
Lucero
Ayahuasa,
by
Pablo
Amaringo,
a
healer
from
the
Peruvian
Amazon,
sets
the
tone
for
this
incredible
CD's
mystery
and
majesty.
See
his
work
on
www.plantvision.org
for
a
preview
of
his
visionary
artwork.
As
to
the
music,
this
treasure
of
a
CD
includes
Benjamin
Mahua,
a
living
master
of
the
Shippibo
Tribe's
ayahuasca
healing
tradition,
offering
chants
from
an
unbroken
lineage
of
shamans
going
back
an
estimated
12,000
years.
The
name
of
this
ensemble,
Tulku,
means
the
emergence
of
an
old
soul
into
a
new
body.
Like
its
name,
Tulku
incarnates
differently
from
one
album
to
another,
with
a
changing
collection
of
gifted
artists
-
Native
American,
Egyptian,
Mayan,
Aboriginal,
Indian,
and
Persian.
A
Universe
to
Come
features
Jim
Wilson,
James
Twyman,
Krishna
Das,
Jai
Uttal,
Gina
Sala,
Sita
Jamieson
Caddle,
Consuelo
Luz,
and
others.
The
music
is
both
modern
and
tribal,
with
powerful
drum
work,
spine-tingling
vocals,
and
hypnotic
instrumentation.
A
Universe
to
Come
promises
a
new
universe
of
primal
strength
and
awesome
spirit.
I
can't
praise
it
highly
enough!
From
the
darkened
streets
and
perfumed
nights
of
Marrakech,
the
sounds
of
hypnotic
playing
and
chanting
rose
from
the
home
of
Hassan's
mother.
A
wise
woman,
she
held
healing,
derdeba
trance
ceremonies
that
lasted
all
night
long.
This,
and
performing
along
with
fire-breathers
and
snake
charmers
on
the
streets
of
Marrakech
at
the
age
of
four,
formed
the
musical
roots
of
Morocco's
Gnawa
Master,
Hassan
Hakmoun.
Now,
combining
Gnawa's
African
rhythms
with
rock,
funk,
and
Arabic
music,
Hassan
Hakmoun
brings
us
his
new
release,
The
Gift
(Triloka
Records,
May
release
date).
The
title
song,
The
Gift,
is
a
joyful,
life
affirming
duet
with
Grammy
Award
singer-songwriter
Paula
Cole,
who
is
also
his
love
and
the
mother
of
their
baby.
My
favorite
track
is
Lala
Aisha,
a
hard-driving
piece
featuring
Hakmoun's
sintir
(three-stringed
African
bass
lute)
and
a
chorus
that
blends
Arabic
melodic
elements
and
African
call-and-response.
It's
electric!
