BRUNSWICK,
MAINE. Maine would seem a long way from the Middle East were it not
for the
fact that in a recent discussion at the Senior College on Bath Road
– not less than a mile from the Brunswick Naval Air Station –
Middle East historian Dr. Dennis Edward Knox, urged caution about a
war with Iraq.
Dr. Knox, 62, Boston College Professor of Middle East and European History
from 1971-1978, and a former CIA administrative manager with the Foreign
Broadcast Information Service – an agency which monitors news from
around the world and transmits it back to Washington, world-wide military
commands and embassies – said he does not understand the urgency
of going to war. “When you have a hammer, like our military, every
problem can look like a nail.”
Instead Dr. Knox urged seniors to look at recent reports which suggest
that friends of the present administration want the U.S. to become an
empire. “The idea of an American Empire is being debated now and
has been for two years with the core idea that we already have an empire
as the world's only superpower and that now is the time to make
that empire formal. National Public Radio aired a discussion on the
subject on 10, September 2001, a date I thought quickly rendered ironic.”
