If anyone knows history it is Knox who holds a bachelor's degree in history from Greenville College, a master's degree in Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard, a doctorate in the history of international relations from Michigan State University, and postgraduate work in Arabic at the American University in Cairo.

Dr. Knox suggests that seniors look at Saddam's intentions. “If you look at Saddam's speeches over the years,” said Dr. Knox, “you can see that his attention has faced East, not West. He is surrounded by a number of vigorous states. And a state has the right to defend itself even if we disagree with its policies. In the past, we supplied Saddam with arms against Iran and with chemicals. At the time Saddam gassed his own people, we said nothing.”

To a senior who asked why we shouldn't stop Saddam from hurting the countries around him, Knox said that it is impossible to destroy all destructive leaders.
