Brain Balancing: A Shortcut to the True Self

By Julia Griffin

Balancing and reducing the vibratory rate between the right and left hemispheres of the brain may be a shortcut on the path to enlightenment, according to Robert Petteway, a massage therapist, acupuncturist, hypnotherapist and Chinese herbalist. Petteway discovered the technique of brain balancing while searching for the repetition of peak consciousness states he experienced through meditation and with his spiritual teachers. Brain balancing methodology is combined with bodywork and breathing techniques to increase awareness of the higher self and to decrease accumulated patterns of stress. This technique can improve performance in many arenas of life such as athletics and mental ability.

Petteway has learned to measure the vibratory rate produced by resistance ('holding on') of a person's brain activity and body tension. Petteway's vibratory rate (which correlates to brainwaves, but is different) is made up of two distinct measurements – wave and tone. Wave refers to the distortion we impose on what we hear, see and feel. Tone refers to the amount of tension in the body. It is the wave and tone that determine our experience of reality. Illusions and truth – whether we distort truth or hear and see accurately – are therefore related to our vibratory rate. The right and left hemispheres of the brain each produce a different tone, called the carrier tone. The difference between the tone produced by the left and right brain creates a modulating wave between the two hemispheres. Our perceptions are recorded through the electrical impulse in the brain that can be  read as this modulating wave. We naturally vary our brain waves to experience relaxation, dreaming, sleep and work. Petteway says that “enlightenment begins as a state of deep quiet in which acquired personality patterns disappear, and one operates as the undefended self, perceiving reality as it is without distortion.”

Studies on learning suggest that genius is present in ordinary people, but the difference lies in learning or stumbling upon a method of widening their attention. Perceptions of reality are altered as one begins to become the 'observer' of personal mental and emotional patterns. Einstein said regarding his theory of relativity, “I very rarely think in words at all.” When the internal dialogue is quieted, new patterns of integrated perception occur.
