World and New Age Music Reviews

Gifted: Women of the World, the long-awaited release from Real World Records, takes listeners on a remarkable, rich, and well-balanced musical journey. Contributions from eight Real World label recording artists, including new material from Sheila Chandra, (UK) make this an exemplary collection of women's music. Sheila Chandra, known for her esoteric and elaborate works, delivers the opening track, a rendition of “Song to the Siren.” Susana Baca, a Peruvian artist of African descent, lulls the listener with her seductive and smoky vocal stylings. With a pop/electronica backdrop, Yungchen Lhamo performs two haunting traditional Tibetan pieces. Eleftheria Arvanitaki (Greece) achieves a dramatic effect in a dark, meditative song titled "Sappho." Four other women artists perform equally evocative works. Gifted: Women of the World is an exceptional recording and highly recommended. A portion from the proceeds from sales of this CD will benefit Witness. Witness was co-founded in 1992 by Peter Gabriel, and uses video and technology to fight for human rights. - CS

Pianist and composer Danny Wright debuts his first release for the Real Music label. Appropriately titled Soul Mates, many of this CD's pieces were written to honor special people or special occasions. “Greyson's Lullaby” was written for a friend's first grandson. “Touched Forever” was composed in memory of John Kennedy, Jr.'s wife Carolyn, and her sister Lauren. Wright favors melodic solo piano performances, but sometimes accents his works with violins. This heartfelt recording conveys moods of love, relaxation, and reflection. Fans of both Jim Brickman and David Lanz will appreciate Wright's music. Soul Mates is a perfect recording for use in massage, yoga, and other relaxation techniques. - CS

Now touring the United States and Canada to promote their new CD Donia, Sawt el Atlas is a ten-member ensemble of French-Moroccan heritage. They combine traditional Arabic music with reggae, funk, flamenco, and European-influenced string arrangements. Singing in French and Arabic, lead vocalists Kamel and Mourner, both of Moroccan descent, are both joyful and mesmerizing. Driving rhythms as intoxicating as spices fuel this music. Donia was recorded in both Paris and Cairo to preserve the authenticity of sound. Although the combination of world music elements is commonplace, perhaps even predictable, Sawt el Atlas has created an irresistible body of work in their first US release. - CS
