Preeminent New Age artist and harpist Hillary Stagg died suddenly after a brief illness in 1999. He was only forty-two. This CD, Hilary Stagg: A Tribute, is a compilation of eight of the musician's best-known and most-loved works. In addition, the CD features new tracks by 2002, Andreas Vollenweider, and Kevin Kern. The music is relaxing and peaceful. The liner notes are lovingly crafted and filled with testimonials from listeners who were deeply moved and even healed - both emotionally and physically - by Stagg's music. Stagg, a self-trained musician, often practiced lucid dreaming. He found a way, according to Terence Yallop, founder of the Real Music label, of composing music in his sleep and these compositions became the core of his musical canon. A wonderful CD for relaxation, bodywork, and meditation, and a fitting final tribute for an important musician. - CS Steven
Halpern's sexy new release, Cruise
Control, is a delicious groove of
World/R&B/Afro-Cuban rhythms featuring
The Sound Medicine Band. At last,
spiritual highs with a beat you can dance
to! The soaring lead guitar and pulsing
bass guitar, combined with a rhythm that
entrances and energizes, can send you straight
into an altered state of consciousness.
The Sound Medicine Band includes Jim
Surles, Mark Van Wageningen, Kim Atkinson,
Geoffrey Gordon and Ian Dogole.
Jim Surles' guitar solos evoke the spirits
of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix -
they are that powerful. Ian Dogole's
udu is sensuous and sultry, and of course,
the masterful Steven Halpern plays all keyboards,
rhythm guitar, and more. Cruise Control
is all about playing in the Zone,
so relax and leave the driving to Steven!

Deborah
Van Dyke gifts us a book and companion
CD, both entitled Traveling the Sacred
Sound Current. This is the equivalent
of a full course in vibrational healing,
with an exploration of the use of crystal
singing bowls, Peruvian whistling vessels,
and chant as instruments for expanding
awareness, healing and transformation.
The book is lushly illustrated and spiced
with wonderful quotations. It offers an
extensive treatment on crystal bowls, their
care and use, and ritual for healing. The
section on Peruvian whistling vessels is
most unusual and inspiring. There is a wealth
of information, too much to cover in this
space. The CD takes the listener to
another level with the sound experience
of timeless mantras, chants, and meditational
ceremony. Deborah Van Dyke has truly
created sacred space with sound in this
music, and I urge you to consider this set
as gifts for the coming holiday season.
